Alcohol
As a result of alcohol consumption, you are at increased risk of a wide variety of cancers, including those of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, larynx, liver, and breast. For alcohol consumers who smoke, this risk increases. According to a previous study, drinking too much alcohol significantly increases the risk of breast cancer. It is recommended to limit alcohol consumption or drink in moderation – women should limit their alcohol consumption to one glass a day and men to two glasses.
Cooking at high temperature
It has been reported that meat cooked at high temperatures, such as frying in a pan or grilling over an open flame, produces heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Amino acids, sugars, and creatine react at high temperatures to create HCAs. On the other hand, PAHs are formed as a result of fat and juice dripping from roasted meat over an open flame, causing a fire.
An animal study concluded that significant exposure to HCAs and PAHs could lead to cancer. Animal test subjects developed breast, colon, liver, skin, lungs, and prostate tumours. Although the dosage in animal test subjects was much higher than consumed by humans, evidence suggests that cooking meat at high temperatures could adversely affect our health and gastrointestinal tract.
Diesel-engine fumes
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diesel engine fumes are carcinogenic for humans. They are similar to secondhand cigarette smoke. When you are stuck in traffic, it is impossible not to breathe in diesel and petrol fumes. If you work or live nearby big cities, diesel fumes can be even more harmful. The greater your exposure, the more likely you will be to develop respiratory problems such as asthma and lung cancer.
UV Radiation
Sunlight is the best natural source of vitamin D, however, excessive exposure to the sun can result in sunburn, premature ageing, eye damage, and skin damage, which can result in cancer. Skin cancers like melanoma can spread to other parts of the body, including lymph nodes and distant organs. The most common cause is UV rays from the sun and tanning beds.
