A Punjabi winter speciality, Matar Paneer is loved by all. Delectable paneer cubes simmered in tomato-rich gravy with seasonal green peas make for an incredible weeknight dinner. Here is an easy recipe to make this winter specialty at your home:

Ingredient required

  1. 200 gm paneer cubes
  2. Oil for frying
  3. 2 tbsp ghee
  4. 1 bayleaf (optional )
  5. 2-3 cloves and 1 cardamom (optional)
  6. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  7. 1 medium onion, chopped
  8. 1 fresh green chilli, chopped
  9. 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  10. ½ tsp turmeric powder
  11. 11/2 tsp degi red chilli powder
  12. 2 tsp coriander powder
  13. 1½ cups fresh tomato puree
  14. Salt to taste
  15. 1 cup green peas
  16. Fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)

How to make

  1. Cut the paneer into cubes and fry them until golden brown.
  2. Once golden brown, remove and put it in a bowl of water and let them cool down and keep aside for further use.
  3. In a kadai heat ghee and add cloves, cumin seeds let them crackle then add onion and saute until translucent.
  4. Now add green chilli, ginger-garlic paste, and sauté for a minute.
  5. Then add turmeric powder, degi red chilli powder, coriander powder and saute until the onions are properly cooked and spices are fragrant.
  6. At this time add the fresh tomato puree, salt and sauté it until it's cooked or the ghee starts coming from sides.
  7. Then add the green peas, fried paneer without water and sauté it for 1-2 minutes.
  8. Now add some water and boil it for 5-6 minutes until a semi thick gravy.
  9. Switch off the flames and serve hot in a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves and Matar paneer is ready serve.
