Who is Rukmini Vasanth, stunning diva winning hearts as warrior princess in Kantara: Chapter 1?
Actress Rukmini Vasanth, who has steadily carved her space in South Indian cinema, is now winning national attention with her powerful role in Rishab Shetty’s magnum opus Kantara: Chapter 1.
The film, a prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara, has opened to a massive response, and Rukmini’s portrayal of Princess Kanakavathi is being hailed as one of the highlights.
Born in Bengaluru in 1996, Rukmini comes from a family of valour and culture. Her father, Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, was martyred during the 2007 Uri mission and awarded the Ashoka Chakra, while her mother, Subhashini Vasanth, is a Bharatanatyam dancer who runs a foundation for war widows.
Rukmini studied at prestigious institutions and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London, before stepping into cinema.

She made her Kannada debut in Birbal (2019) and went on to deliver acclaimed performances in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello, Baanadariyalli, and Bagheera. Her role in Sapta Sagaradaache Ello won her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Kannada, cementing her reputation as a serious performer.
In Kantara: Chapter 1, Rukmini had to undergo rigorous training in sword-fighting and horse-riding to play the regal Kanakavathi. Fans and critics alike have praised her grace, depth, and strength on screen. The film, set in the Kadamba dynasty era, has not only expanded Rukmini’s reach but also positioned her as one of the most promising faces of Indian cinema.
For the actress, this role is nothing short of transformative. “Kantara gave me everything at once. I had to stretch myself in multiple directions,” she said in a recent interview, crediting director Rishab Shetty for shaping her journey.
