Arijit Singh left fans stunned on Tuesday evening after announcing his retirement from playback singing. The celebrated singer shared the news first through his private X account before posting an official note on Instagram.

While he has decided to stop accepting new playback assignments, Arijit clarified that he will continue working as a composer.

Arijit Singh Announces His Decision

In his retirement note, Arijit thanked listeners for their unwavering love and support over the years. Calling his journey “a wonderful one,” he described the decision as the end of a powerful chapter and the beginning of a new creative phase.

The announcement triggered an emotional response online, with fans calling it “the end of an era” and urging him to reconsider.

For over a decade, Arijit’s voice has shaped Indian cinema, defining romance, heartbreak, hope and longing through countless iconic songs.

Shreya Ghoshal Calls It a New Beginning

Singer Shreya Ghoshal, who has collaborated with Arijit on several memorable tracks, reacted with optimism. Commenting on his Instagram post, she wrote, “It’s the start of a new phase of @arijitsingh and I am truly excited to hear, listen and experience what this genius churns out.”

Rejecting the idea of an ending, Shreya added that an artist like Arijit cannot be confined to traditional definitions. “I can never call this the end of an era. An artist of his calibre can never be defined by traditional means or boxed into a set formula. Time to soar higher, my dear Arijit,” she wrote.

The two singers recently collaborated on Maatrubhumi, a song from Battle of Galwan, released just days before his announcement.

Industry Reactions Pour In

Singer and composer Armaan Malik also shared an emotional response, noting that an artist’s soul often guides them toward change. He described Arijit’s decision as the close of one chapter and the start of another meaningful journey. Armaan’s brother, composer Amaal Mallik, admitted he was shocked but expressed deep respect, adding that film music will never be the same without Arijit’s voice.
