But the filmmaker says that the hue and cry was unwarranted as his film is simply a good old "chor police ki kahaani" with no resemblance to real life events.
The film had run into controversy over it`s alleged negative portrayal of Goa and Goan women but Sippy, the son of Ramesh `Sholay` Sippy, says that the film does not pass any such judgements.
"This film is not a `No One Killed Jessica`, which was it`s director`s interpretation of how a real life event unfolded. `Dum Maro Dum` is a thriller driven by it`s genre rather than any sensational incident that happened in Goa," Sippy told PTI.
The sunshine state has been in news over the past few years for all the wrong reasons and has earned epitaphs like `cocaine coast`, but Sippy says that the story could be set anywhere but he chose Goa for it`s natural beauty.
"Before starting work on the film I read up as much as I could about Goa. The Scarlett case, the reports about the drug mafia and the political scandals but my film is based on the script written by Sridhar Raghavan," said the helmer.
"In early March 2009, Sridhar gave me the script and I could not put it down. We soon took a train to Goa and that was when work began. At the end of the day cinema is a spectacle and Goa was the perfect setting for the film. The beaches, the markets, the carnival, it is like no other place in India and yet it very much a part of the nation`s psyche as the hippy paradise," said Sippy.
The director is a creature of habit when it comes to collaborations and `Dum Maro Dum`, Sippy`s third outing as a director, is his second venture with Raghavan and sees him reunite with Abhishek Bachchan, who has starred in all his films.
"Making a film is a team effort and it`s important to have a team that you work well with. The idea of `Dum Maro Dum` originated with Shridhar Raghavan who also wrote `Bluff Master` and is again working on another script for me," said Sippy.
And as for childhood friend Abhishek, he said, "Abhishek is a very confident actor, he is also a very generous actor. The last film that we did together `Bluff Master` was all about Abhishek`s character but `Dum Maro Dum` has three story lines and an ensemble cast."
When asked about his obvious penchant for thrillers, Sippy said, "It will be an ideal world where we could all do different things every day and also be good at all of it. But that is how you grow, by not sticking to one genre and the same tools because there is always the danger of becoming mechanical."
`Dum Maro Dum` starring Abhishek, Bipasha Basu, Rana Daggubati and Prateik Babbar will release on April 22.
