The legal tussle surrounding late businessman Sunjay Kapur’s estate has taken a new turn after the Supreme Court sought actor Karisma Kapoor’s response to a plea filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur.
Priya has requested certified copies of Karisma and Sunjay’s 2016 divorce settlement, a move that has now drawn a sharp reaction from Sunjay’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith.

Mandhira Kapur Smith calls plea a ‘diversion’
Reacting to the development, Mandhira Kapur Smith told news agency ANI that Priya’s demand appears to be an attempt to divert attention from the real issues at hand. “It’s trying to divert what is going on. Firstly, if my brother wanted to share this with her, he would have shared it with her while they were married,” she said.
Mandhira questioned why Priya was pushing for access to documents that had already been shown in court earlier. “I don’t understand why she is trying to play all this when she has already showed this in court. So yes, it is to divert from what is going on in reality,” she added.
‘Divorce is confidential, says Sunjay Kapur’s sister
Emphasising the sensitive nature of the matter, Mandhira stressed that a divorce involving children should remain private. “I think a divorce is confidential. They have children together. It’s not like it’s a divorce without children,” she said.
She further asserted that the details of Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s divorce are nobody else’s concern. “I don’t think it’s anybody’s business, except for the two people who are involved in it. It is none of her business,” Mandhira stated firmly.
Background of the legal dispute
Priya Sachdev Kapur has approached the Supreme Court seeking certified copies of all documents related to the 2016 divorce between Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur. She reportedly wants to verify financial settlements and child custody arrangements agreed upon by the former couple.
Sunjay Kapur, the former chairman of Sona Comstar, married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. They had two children—daughter Samaira, born in 2005, and son Kiaan, born in 2011. The couple filed for divorce in 2014, which was finalised in 2016. After the separation, Sunjay married Priya Sachdev, and they later welcomed a son, Azarias.
The controversy is unfolding amid an ongoing legal battle over Sunjay’s estate. Last year, Priya submitted a document in the Delhi High Court claiming it to be his will, which was challenged by Samaira, Kiaan and Rani. Reports have suggested Sunjay’s assets could be worth ₹30,000 crore, though Karisma’s children have said they are unaware of the exact value.
