Chadwick Boseman renowned for playing Black icons like James Brown and Jackie Robinson breathed his last today. He was battling colon cancer for the last four years. He was a true inspiration for the black community. Chadwick gave them hope that they too can share international platforms side-by-side with the whites.
Once Chadwick Boseman Revealed How a Young and Gifted Black Person Feels
Last year on 28 January the cast of Boseman's Black Panther won a top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. During his backstage address, the actor revealed how it feels to be young, gifted, and black.
Chadwick said, "When I think of going to work every day and the passion and the intelligence, the passion and resolved everybody showed. I also think of two questions that we all have received during the course of multiple publicity runs. And the one is, did we know that this movie was going to receive this kind of response - meaning was it going to make billions of dollars?"
The Black Panther further said, "Was it going to be still around during this award season? And the second question is has it changed the industry? Has it actually changed the way this industry works? How it sees us. And my answer to that is: To be young, gifted, and black. All of us here know how it is to be young, gifted, and black, to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured."
Chadwick said, 'We Knew What It's Like to be Beneath and Not Above'
This address from Chadwick gives a clear reflection of how black people in the US struggle to get accepted, make a place for themselves.
The Marvel superstar added, "We know what it's like to be told-to say that there is not a screen for you to be featured on, to be featured on a stage. We know what it's like to be a tail and not the head. We know what it's like to be beneath and not above. And that is what we went to work with every day. Because we knew-not that we would be around during award season or that it would make a billion dollars. But we knew we had something special that we could give the world."
The incidence of Black Lives Matter exposed the truth about the adversities and discrimination Black communities continue to face in the US. Chadwick Boseman's views give an insight as to how the community is still struggling to find that recognition that is a must for every human being. Boseman said, "We knew we could be full human beings in the role that we were playing. That we can create a world that exemplified the world that we wanted to see. We knew that we had something that we wanted to give."
He ended the address saying, "It is a pleasure to be celebrated by you, loved by you. And one thing I do know that did it change the industry? I do now that you cannot have a Black Panther now without a 2 on it. So we love you and celebrate you."
Chadwick Boseman found fame as the regal Black Panther in Marvel's cinematic universe. His film continues to be the 2nd biggest superhero flick in the United States. It collected $700M at the box-office.
