Throughout our lives we came across a variety of teachers who inspired us, give us direction, and left an impression on us that we realized years later. There are some teachers who made us laugh while we learnt some who were feared by all and some who helped us discover our passion.

Bollywood has paid its tribute to those teachers in more ways than one by giving us iconic characters-- from the strict and competitive dean Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe of 3 Idiots to the gorgeous Miss Chandini of Main Hoon Na. Let us take a look at the most celebrated teachers on reel life.

Aamir Khan in Taare Zameen Par - Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Aamir Khan) took us on a journey to bring out the best in his student Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safari) who was struggling with academics and his life in the hostel. Both gave life to one of the most extraordinary student-teacher relationships on screen. Ram not only succeeded in inspiring us but also brought tears to our eyes when he was defeated by his student at the painting competition.

Amitabh Bachchan in Black - Loosely based on the life of Hellen Killer and her teacher, Debraj Sahai (Amitabh Bachchan) goes to every extent to teach his student Michelle (Rani Mukherjee) who is born blind and deaf. It showcased that being a teacher exceeds the boundaries of four walls and a bell ring. His conventional and harsh ways seemed hard to digest for Michelle but it all ultimately pays off with eventual progress. The story comes to a full circle when at the end Michele tries to teach his sick teacher Debraj when he was old.

Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na - Miss Chandni ( Susmita Sen) made heads turn wherever she went and violins started playing with her presence. She reminds of that one teacher for whom we attended even the most boring lectures because we were secretly crushing on them. Main Hoon Na brings out this undertone in the most adorable way when we see Ram Prasad Sharma (Shah Rukh Khan) smitten by his chemistry teacher Chandni with his arms wide open and music playing in the background whenever he sees her.

Boman Irani in 3 Idiots - Dr. Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Boman Irani) or as the students fondly named him ‘Virus’ had to be on the list because of obvious reasons. His conventional teaching methods showed the reality of the education system in India. He was fiercely competitive and because of his constant strive for excellence he wasn’t the most likable professor but was all about the betterment of the students, we all have a “Virus” in our lives who is strict when it comes to discipline, isn’t it?

Shah Rukh Khan in Chak De! India - A former Indian Men’s Hockey Team player Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) coaches a team of girls for Indian Women’s Hockey Team who have nothing in common by being the bad guy so the girls end up uniting even if it was to go against him. He deals with each player differently according to their strengths and weaknesses, finally taking them to the finale of the championship. And the “Sattar minutes” (70 minutes) speech is still one of the most motivating speeches whether in a classroom or on-field.
