Aditya Dhar’s film Dhurandhar, headlined by Ranveer Singh, has secured approval from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for a 5 December release. But while the certification promises a smooth launch, it has also triggered disappointment within the family of late Major Mohit Sharma, who believe they were left out of the process.

The clearance arrived soon after the Delhi High Court advised the CBFC to consider the parents’ concerns and consult the Indian Army if required. A day later, the board cleared the film as a fictional work.
Family Appreciates Speed, But Lacks Clarity
Major Sharma’s brother, Madhur Sharma, welcomed the swift response but admitted the family is still unsure about the material reviewed by the CBFC.
He said, “I am sure they’ve followed the process and they were very quick to take a decision, which is good. We don’t know what data CBFC has relied on but I am sure they have done their due diligence. They have said that it is a work of fiction so I hope that a disclaimer will be duly added.”
Screening For Parents Could Have Prevented Speculation
While not opposing the release, the family believes a simple pre-screening would have helped calm the debate that has erupted online.
Madhur said, “I just feel that a screening could have been organised for the parents so that any misconceptions floating on social media could have been clarified. People who have lived their entire life with him are in a better position to tell if anything in the film replicates his life, rather than someone outside the ecosystem.”
Legal Options Still Under Consideration
The family remains undecided about pursuing further legal steps, and will consult experts before making a move.
Madhur stated, "I am yet to speak to the lawyers… whether we should file a rejoinder...let's see."
Online Comparisons Fueled Controversy
Speculation began after the trailer dropped, with users drawing parallels between Ranveer Singh’s role and Major Sharma’s life. Madhur questioned these similarities online, leading some to ask why a petition was filed when the director had already denied any link.
He clarified the sequence of events, saying, “There is a 36-48 hour difference between my tweet and Aditya Dhar’s reply. The petition was filed during that time.”
Family Seeks Empathy, Not Compensation
The family insists their demand is simple - truth and sensitivity. Madhur said, “There is no benefit the parents are looking for. We want people to take a sympathetic, empathetic perspective. This is not just for us but for every family that has lost a son (in military operations) We just want due diligence. If the film is based on him, just say, ‘Sorry, we didn’t inform you.’ If not, say the hype is untrue.”
