Ranveer Singh’s much-anticipated comeback film Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, has been dominating headlines- though not entirely for cinematic reasons. Despite the makers maintaining silence on the film’s storyline, speculation has intensified that Ranveer’s role mirrors the life of Ashoka Chakra and Sena Medal awardee, Late Major Mohit Sharma.

Although Aditya Dhar recently issued clarity on the matter, a report by Bar and Bench reveals that Major Sharma’s parents have now moved the Delhi High Court, demanding an urgent stay on the film’s release.
Family Seeks Stay Over Alleged Unauthorised Portrayal
The petition filed by Major Sharma’s family argues that Dhurandhar appears to draw heavily from the officer’s covert missions, sacrifice, and legacy- without any form of approval from the Indian Army or his legal heirs. They stress that despite the persistent association made by the media and online chatter, the filmmakers have neither acknowledged the inspiration nor sought the family’s consent.
The plea emphasises that a martyr “is not a commercial commodity,” asserting that recreating a soldier’s life for profit cannot be justified without authenticity, dignity, and proper permissions.
The family further claims that such an unauthorised depiction infringes upon the martyr’s posthumous personality rights under Article 21 of the Constitution, while also violating their own right to privacy and respect.
Concerns Over National Security Clearance
Another major issue raised in the plea concerns national security. According to the petition, the film seemingly showcases sensitive military strategies- including infiltration methods and Special Forces procedures- without any confirmation that the makers obtained mandatory approval from the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI). This body oversees how the Indian Army is portrayed in films, ensuring accuracy and security compliance.
Aditya Dhar on the Speculation
The release of Dhurandhar’s trailer sparked widespread discussion, with many drawing parallels between the film and real-life incidents. Addressing this buzz, especially regarding Major Mohit Sharma- who reportedly went undercover as Iftikhar Bhatt to infiltrate Hizbul Mujahideen- director Aditya Dhar issued a firm clarification.
Responding to a query from Mohit Sharma’s brother, Madhur Sharma, Dhar wrote, “Hi, sir - our film Dhurandhar is not based on the life of brave heart Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM. This is an official clarification. I assure you, if we do make a biopic on Mohit sir in the future, we will do it with full consent and in complete consultation with the family, and in a way that truly honours his sacrifice for the nation and the legacy it has left for all of us.” (sic)
Notably, Major Mohit Sharma was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra in 2009 following his heroic sacrifice during an anti-terror operation in the Kupwara sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
