Awarapan 2: Emraan Hashmi explains delay, says ‘A sequel needs to be worthy’

Nearly two decades after Awarapan carved its place as a cult favourite, Awarapan 2 is finally rolling. The original’s gritty romance, haunting music, and Emraan Hashmi’s brooding presence set the bar high, making the sequel’s delay a subject of intense curiosity among fans.

Why The Makers Waited 19 Years?

In a candid chat with Man’s World India, Emraan Hashmi explained why the sequel took so long to materialise. He revealed that the decision was always guided by quality over speed.

“I was holding off for the longest as a sequel needs to be worthy of the first one, and I was waiting for a good script. But Bilal [writer Bilal Siddiqi] got a great subject and once we read it, we decided to go ahead.”

Leaked Set Photos Spark Security Concerns

In late December 2025, leaked photos and videos from the Awarapan 2 sets went viral, showcasing Emraan Hashmi in a rugged, long-haired, battle-worn avatar. The visuals hinted at a darker, evolved version of his character and instantly reignited nostalgia among fans.

However, the leaks also prompted the makers to tighten security on the Rajasthan sets to prevent further unauthorised access.

“After the photos were leaked, access had to be tightened. Phones are now restricted on set, and movement around the location is being closely monitored; certain areas have been cordoned off. Multiple terrace-sequence videos were leaked by locals," a Mid-Day report mentioned earlier.

Focus Remains on Story, Music, and Legacy

Despite the leak-related chatter, the production team is reportedly unfazed. Their priority remains the film’s narrative and soundtrack. Original composer Pritam has returned, strengthening the emotional and musical continuity of the franchise. Shooting is progressing swiftly, with authorities ensuring on-set security.

Awarapan 2 sees Emraan Hashmi reprise his iconic role as Shivam. The film also stars Disha Patani as the female lead and features Shabana Azmi in a pivotal role. Directed by Nitin Kakkar and produced by Vishesh Films, the sequel promises action, romance, and emotional depth within its familiar gritty gangster world.
