The announcement earlier this year that Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani would collaborate on a biopic of Dadasaheb Phalke, the “Father of Indian Cinema,” sparked immense excitement among cinephiles. A press release confirmed the project, and speculation suggested Khan would take it up after completing Sitaare Zameen Par. However, buzz soon followed that the venture had been halted after Khan allegedly asked for a rewrite. Now, Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Pusalkar, has clarified the situation.

“There were stories that the script was being re-edited, but I checked with Aamir Khan’s team, and they confirmed that this news was completely false,” he said.

“The script is already finalised, and the project will begin soon. Rajkumar Hirani has also shown keen interest. If this film is made, it will not just be cinema. It will be an inspiration, showing people exactly how much my grandfather contributed to Indian cinema.”

Memories Through Stories

Though he never met Dadasaheb Phalke, who passed away in 1944, Pusalkar revealed that his mother’s recollections kept the filmmaker’s legacy alive at home.

“As a child, I slowly realised my grandfather was not like others. His name appeared in newspapers, and my mother would proudly point it out to the family,” he recalled.

“She would say, ‘Look, this is your grandfather. He did great things.’ I never got to see him, but through her words, I felt his presence,” he added.

He also remembered the discipline his mother instilled. “Whenever I misbehaved, she would scold me, saying, ‘You should have been in your grandfather’s kingdom.’ Sometimes it made me upset. I would wonder, who is this grandfather because of whom I am being scolded all the time? But later, when I learned about him, I felt grateful for those words.”

About the Legend

Dadasaheb Phalke remains a revered figure in Indian film history. His pioneering 1913 film, Raja Harishchandra, is celebrated as the first full-length Indian feature. It marked the beginning of what would become one of the world’s largest film industries-a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
