From wheelchair to UPSC success story: Suraj Tiwari’s inspiring journey of grit and triumph
Suraj Tiwari’s life is a powerful example of courage, resilience, and unwavering determination in the face of extreme adversity. In 2017, his life took a tragic turn when he was involved in a devastating train accident that left him with severe physical disabilities. Suraj lost both his legs below the knees, his right arm, and two fingers of his left hand. For many, such a life-altering incident could have marked the end of dreams and ambitions. For Suraj, however, it became the beginning of a new journey defined by grit and hope.
Determined To Rebuild
At the time of the accident, Suraj was employed with a private firm in Noida and had been travelling to his hometown Mainpuri, when the mishap occurred. During his prolonged treatment at AIIMS, he experienced a moment of deep reflection that changed the course of his life. He realised that the accident could not define his future. Determined to rebuild his life with purpose, he resolved to pursue the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination.

With immense physical limitations and no access to coaching institutes, Suraj began preparing for the examination through self-study at home. Using only three functional fingers, he devoted himself to his books with remarkable discipline and focus. His perseverance bore fruit in 2023, when he cleared one of the toughest competitive examinations in the country in his very first attempt, securing an impressive rank of 917. He even appeared for the UPSC examination while using a wheelchair, further highlighting his determination.
Heartbreaking Personal Loss
Amid his own struggles, Suraj also faced a heartbreaking personal loss when his brother died by suicide in the same year as the accident. The emotional and financial burden on the family was immense, with his father, Rajesh Tiwari, a tailor by profession, bearing the medical expenses. Suraj’s mother, Asha Devi, later described this period as the darkest phase of their lives.
Today, Suraj Tiwari serves as an officer in the Indian Information Service. Beyond his official role, he stands as a source of inspiration for countless people, proving that even the harshest setbacks cannot extinguish the human spirit when determination and courage lead the way.
