Bhubaneswar: Almost a week after brown sugar worth around Rs 50 lakh was seized by Crime Branch STF, the Commissionerate Police swung to action and seized brown sugar worth over Rs 10 lakh in separate operations on Monday.

According to reports, the Quick Action Team (QAT) of Commissionerate Police arrested a drugs peddler, a resident of Jaleswar area in Balasore, from Saheed Nagar area in Bhubaneswar and recovered brown sugar weighing around 100 grams from his possession. The accused has been identified as Budhia Khan, who reportedly used to supply brown sugar in different parts of Bhubaneswar.

Chandrasekhar Police also claimed breakthrough by arresting two persons including a student following a raid. Twenty four grams of brown sugar has been seized from the possession of the student who is pursuing his diploma from a city based college, sources said.

Earlier on January 25, a woman from West Bengal and two of her associates were arrested from Laxmisagar area of Bhubaneswar for their alleged involvement in brown sugar peddling racket.

Senior officials of Commissionerate police informed that nearly 105 persons have been arrested in 56 cases pertaining to brown sugar smuggling & peddling registered in the last three months. Police Commissioner Sudhanshu Sarangi informed that a special drug task force was constituted comprising officials of the QAT in September last year.

“In a special crackdown on narcotics trade, 1,302 grams of brown sugar worth nearly Rs 1.5 crore has been seized. Out of the total arrests, 40 persons are mostly from outside Bhubaneswar,” said Sarangi.
