Kendrapara: A woman died after being set on fire allegedly by her in-laws for dowry at Balisuan village under Marsaghai police limits in the district on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Bharati Swain.

As per sources, Bharati's mother-in-law and three sisters-in-law poured kerosene on her after tying her hands and legs. Husband of the deceased Nirmal Sahu and father in-law Nishamani Sahu were not present when the incident took place, sources added.

In the dying declaration, Bharati said that her mother-in-law and three sisters-in-law set her on fire.

Meanwhile, family members of the woman have lodged a police complaint against her in-laws holding them responsible for the death of the woman. The relatives of the victim alleged that her in-laws had been torturing her demanding dowry and when the demand was not met, they set her on fire.

“Earlier a case was registered at the police station regarding dowry torture. But the issue was resolved after compromise. However, yesterday her in-laws set her on fire for dowry again,” said brother of the deceased.

As per reports, the woman was initially rushed to a local hospital and later shifted to SCB Medical and Hospital in Cuttack where she breathed her last.

On the other hand, two rooms of the victim's house also gutted in the fire.
