Malkangiri: An undertrial prisoner escaped from Malkangiri sub-jail on Tuesday. The prisoner, Ajit Sahu, managed to escape when a drain cleaning work was being carried out inside the jail.

According to sources, Sahu was lodged in the jail since January 2019 after being arrested by Balimela police on charges of illegally transporting cannabis.

The matter came to light after the jail authorities, during a regular checking, found Sahu missing from the jail premises. Subsequently, a complaint was lodged at Malkangiri police station by the jail Superintendent.

“A case has been registered against Sahu and efforts are underway to nab him,” said Malkangiri Inspector in Charge (IIC), Ranjan Sahu.
