Berhampur: Yet again a woman walker becomes the target of the conmen. Impersonating as police officials, two miscreants allegedly robbed gold ornaments from a woman at Daliasahi under Sadar Police limits of Berhampur today.

As per sources, one VV Sarada of Military area here was returning from a temple when two bike-borne youths intercepted her at Daliasahi. Identifying themselves as police officials, they advised Sarada to take off her gold ornaments and asked her to keep them safely citing that few gangs are on looting spree. Besides, they showed fake police IDs to Sarada to gain her trust.

Seconds later, another youth arrived at the site and advised her the same. When Sarada finally took-off her ornaments, the robbers managed to get the jewellery from her assuring to wrap them in a piece of paper.

Without Sarada's knowledge, they allegedly exchanged the gold with small stones and handed her over the wrapping. It was only after Sarada reached home, she realised that she has been looted.

"Three persons identifying themselves as cops forced me to take off my ornaments and wrap them in a paper. When I wanted to keep the ornament in my purse they forced me to give them for wrapping in a piece of paper or else they would fine me 2000 rupees. However, when I handed over them my ornaments out of fear, they exchanged it with stones. I realized this only after reaching home," said the woman in shock.

Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra, meanwhile, has assured that the robbers will be identified and arrested soon. He also said that cops will intensify awareness drive to sensitize the people.

While frequent loots have created panic among the residents of the Silk City, it has also posed a challenge for the police as they are yet to make any headway in five such cases which took place in the city recently.

In a bid to intensify its drive to check loots, Berhampur police has started bike patrolling and several awareness drives. However, even that seems to have failed to make any impact on the residents.
