Cuttack: A miscreant was caught hold and thrashed by some locals while he was trying to escape allegedly after looting gold ornaments worth lakhs from a jewellery shop at CDA Sector-6 in Cuttack last night.

According to reports, five miscreants came in a car while three of them entered Sree Ram Jewellery Workshop pretending as customers. A few minutes later, they allegedly threatened the shop owner Ganesh Das, by brandishing guns and looted gold worth lakhs of rupees.

After Das raised an alarm, a few locals gathered at the spot and managed to nab one of the miscreants while the other four fled the scene along with the looted ornaments. The robber was beaten up before being handed over to Markatnagar Police.

“Three persons entered the shop and spoke to me about purchasing gold ornaments. After I displayed the ornaments, they threatened to kill me and ran away with gold worth around Rs 1.5 lakh,” alleged the shop owner.

Meanwhile, the cops are interrogating the robber to get information about his aides. They are also verifying the CCTV footage of the jewellery shop and nearby establishments. Further investigation into the matter is underway.

The incident has raised many eyebrows over the law and order in the Silver City as the loot has taken place some 400 metres away from the local police station.
