Angul: A court on Friday awarded death penalty to a 22-year-old youth for raping and killing a minor girl in Angul on January 20, 2019. The convict has been identified as Srinibash Dehury alias Anam, a resident of Kangula village in Angul.

The judge of POCSO court, Surendra Chandra Pradhan pronounced the verdict and sentenced Dehury to death for murder. The judge also awarded the convict life-term for rape.

As per reports, the minor girl was on her way to feed her father, when Dehury had raped and then killed her by smashing her face with a stone. Soon after committing the crime Dehury had fled to Kolkata in order to avoid arrest.

A case (52/19) under Sections 376(3),302,201 IPC and Section 6 of POCSO Act was registered at Angul Police station in this regard and four teams were formed to nab the accused person.

Later, Dehury was arrested from Kolkata.

The case was taken up as a Red Flag case and chargesheet was framed promptly by police within one month.

The case ended up with conviction in record time of five months of chargesheet, after the accused was convicted with death penalty for murder, life imprisonment for rape and punishment under other sections of law by POCSO court today.

"It is the first death penalty under POCSO Act in the State. I believe that such verdict will definitely bring changes in the society," said special public prosecutor, Saroj Pattanaik.
