Nabarangpur: A newly-married woman was allegedly killed by her husband and in-laws at Kakudiamba village under Maidalpur Police station limits of Nabarangpur district on Tuesday.

One Dharmananda Nayak of Kakudiamba had reportedly married to Rasmita Satnami of Chichia village under Junagarh Tehsil in Kalahandi district on July 1 this year. During the initial few days Rasmita had a good rapport with her in-laws, however on August 5, the family members allegedly harassed her demanding more dowry.

Sources said Rasmita’s in-laws asked her parents to go to Nabarangpur hospital yesterday saying that she was unwell. However, as they arrived at the hospital, they saw that Rasmita's body was kept in the morgue of the hospital. Asked, they were told that she committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan.

“They had been torturing our daughter ever since her marriage. Her husband had also beaten her earlier this month. They called us to meet her at Nabarangpur hospital as soon as possible but now we find that she is dead. I think that there is something fishy behind her death, so we have filed a police complaint against her husband and in-laws,” said Rasmita’s father Sradhananda Satnami.

Raju Sarab, one of the relatives of the deceased woman alleged, “I suspect that her husband and in-laws had tied her hands and legs with rope and smothered her with a pillow."

Police have launched a probe into the incident.
