Jajpur: Exposing chinks in existing security measures, miscreants decamped with Rs 25 lakh cash from an ATM of the State Bank of India (SBI) near Ambakai in Jajpur district.

A gang of robbers looted the money after prise opening the ATM with gas cutters. As no security was deployed at the ATM kiosk, the miscreants pulled down the shutter and managed to commit the crime with ease, sources said.

Though the incident occurred on late Monday night, it came to light today after a customer, who arrived at the ATM to withdraw money, found the machine broken and raised an alarm.

Sources said the cash management agency had deposited Rs 28 lakh in the particular ATM yesterday. While nearly Rs 3 lakh was dispensed to various customers, the miscreants looted Rs 25 lakh from the ATM.

Following the incident, senior police officials including Jajpur SP Charan Singh Meena rushed to the spot for investigation.

“As per the bank officials, Rs 25 lakh has been stolen from the ATM and we have begun investigation,” said Meena.

Meena further informed that earlier the bank officials were advised to deploy security guard and install CCTV so that it covers major portion of road. But it seems that still there are some lacunae and we hope that such issues are resolved by bank officials at the earliest.
