Bhubaneswar: Residents of Nilachakra slum in the capital city caught two youths and beat them up for allegedly selling brown sugar in the slum today.

According to sources, a youth was allegedly selling the contraband to some youths of the slum, when local residents caught and thrashed him before handing over to the police today morning. Another youth was also detained by the local residents late last night for allegedly selling narcotics in the area.

Asked, both the accused clarified that they had kept the drugs for personal consumption and not for sale.

"We caught a youth red handed, while he was selling drugs in the slum and handed him over him to the police. Last night we had also nabbed a youth who was selling brown sugar and informed the PCR van. Cops reached the slum and seized a motorcycle and five packets of brown sugar," said a local resident.

It may be noted that the several slums of the capital city like Haladipadia and Salia Sahi have gained notoriety in illegal trade of drugs. Locals allege that despite repeated complaints over the spurt in the sale of the contraband items, the police and administration has failed to curb the trade.
