Bhubaneswar: Customs officials seized 254-gram gold worth Rs 8 lakh from a passenger who arrived at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar today.

Sources said the customs sleuths intercepted the passenger who arrived in Bhubaneswar from Kuala Lumpur. Later during a search, gold of foreign origin weighing around 254 grams with an estimated market value of Rs 8 lakh was recovered from his possession.

According to sources, the gold was found concealed inside the rectum of the accused in powdered form and wrapped in a duct tape. The identity of the passenger is yet to be established.

Meanwhile, the customs officials are interrogating the accused to elicit more information and further investigation into the case is underway.

It is pertinent to mention that several gold smuggling attempts via Bhubaneswar airport have been thwarted by the customs officials in the past few months.
