Berhampur: In a day which saw Ganjam Police carrying out two separate encounters, one dreaded criminal was killed while two others sustained critical injuries. The deceased has been identified as dreaded criminal Babu Naika.

According to sources, Jagannathprasad Police had intensified patrolling to nab anti-socials in the region after receiving a tip off about movement of Naika and his associates in the area. After being traced, Babu and his associates opened fire at police, who retaliated. Following exchange of fire, Police managed to nab the criminals who were injured in the encounter, added sources. Police also seized two pistos, live ammunition and a motorcycle.

Babu was initially rushed to Jagannathprasad CHC and later died while being shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, informed a police official. As per police sources, Babu had more than 20 criminal cases pending against his name at different police stations.

“Earlier Babu was arrested by Ganjam police in connection with a bomb blast, but escaped while undergoing treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital on November 25. A case was registered in this regard and a manhunt was launched by the police to nab Nayak,” Additional SP of Berhampur, Santanu Das said.

Earlier today, another notorious criminal Anant Kumar Macchua alias Mani suffered injuries on his right leg during an encounter with police near Gudidhepa in Khallikote.
