Global COVID-19 cases reach over 6.1 mn: Johns Hopkins

The total number of global coronavirus cases has increased to over 6.1 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 371,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

As of Monday morning, the overall number of cases stood at 6,165,181, while the death toll increased to 371,995, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

With 1,789,364 confirmed cases and 104,358 deaths, the US accounts for the highest number of infections and fatalities in the world, according to the CSSE.

Meanwhile, in terms of cases, Brazil comes in second place with 514,849 infections.

This was followed by Russia (405,843), the UK (276,156), Spain (239,479), Italy (232,997), India (190,609), France (189,009), Germany (183,410), Peru (164,476), Turkey (163,942), and Iran (151,466), the CSSE figures showed.

Regarding fatalities, the UK continues in the second position after the US with 38,571 COVID-19 deaths, which also accounts for the highest fatalities in Europe.

The other countries with over 10,000 deaths are Italy (33,415), Brazil (29,314), France (28,805) and Spain (27,127).

With 839 new cases Turkey's COVID-19 tally touches 163,942

Turkish health minister on Sunday confirmed 839 new COVID-19 cases, noting that the increase is within predictable margins.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Turkey climbed to 163,942, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca tweeted on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

In the past 24 hours, 25 people died, taking the death toll to 4,540, the minister stated.

Turkey conducted 35,600 tests for coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the overall number of tests carried out so far to 2,039,194, he said.

The total number of recovered cases stood at 127,973 in Turkey since the outbreak, while 648 patients are being treated at intensive care units.

Turkey reported the first COVID-19 case in the country on March 11.

Israel reports 59 new COVID-19 cases, 17,071 in total

Israel's Ministry of Health reported 59 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 17,071.

According to the ministry, the number of death cases has increased from 284 to 285, while the number of recoveries reached 14,792 and the number of active cases rose to 1,994, Xinhua news agency reported.

The number of patients in serious condition dropped from 36 to 33, out of 114 patients currently hospitalized.

Also on Sunday, Israeli Health Minister Yuli Edelstein announced a significant expansion of coronavirus tests following the rise in morbidity in recent days.

Thus, all household members of the new confirmed coronavirus patients will undergo immediate COVID-19 tests even if they have no symptoms.

People without symptoms, who have been in close contact with patients diagnosed in schools, nursing homes and other institutions, will also be tested.

1,648 new COVID-19 infections detected in Qatar

Qatar's health ministry announced 1,648 new infections of the novel coronavirus, increasing the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 56,910.

"Some 4,451 people recovered, bringing the total number of recoveries to 30,290, while two died, raising the fatalities to 38," the official Qatar News Agency reported, quoting a ministry statement on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

A total of 222,069 persons have undergone lab tests for COVID-19 so far.

China and Qatar have offered mutual help during the fight against COVID-19 pandemic. On February 21, five Qatar Airways cargo freighters flew to China carrying approximately 300 tons of medical supplies donated by the airline.

Iraq confirms 260 new COVID-19 cases, 10 deaths

Iraqi Health Ministry confirmed 10 more deaths from COVID-19 and 260 new cases, as the total number of infections climbed to 6,439.

The new cases included 95 in the capital Baghdad, 31 in Maysan, 26 in Babil, 24 in each Sulaimaniyah and Basra, 21 in Muthanna, nine in Diwaniyah, seven in each Wasit, Najaf and Kirkuk, four in Duhok, two in each Diyala and Dhi Qar and one in Anbar, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Ten of the infected people died during the day, five of them in Baghdad's hospitals and two in Maysan and one in each Kirkuk, Diyala and Sulaimaniyah, bringing the death toll in the country to 205, while 3,156 have recovered so far, the statement said.

The latest cases were recorded after 5,381 test kits were used across the country during the past 24 hours, and a total of 227,756 tests have been carried out since the outbreak of the disease, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Sayf al-Badr, the spokesman of the Health Ministry said in a statement that the current increase of the infections of the disease is within the capability and the capacity of the ministry.

No new asymptomatic cases in Wuhan for 1st time

Wuhan, the capital of China's Hubei province where the COVID-19 pandemic originated last December, reported no new asymptomatic cases for the first time since the city released figures on the virus carriers showing no symptoms, authorities said on Monday.

The city conducted more than 60,000 nucleic acid tests on Sunday, finding no new asymptomatic cases, according to a statement issued on Monday by the municipal health commission.

Wuhan started a campaign on May 14 to expand nucleic acid testing in order to better know the number of asymptomatic cases or people who show no clear symptoms despite carrying the virus, reports Xinhua news agency.

The National Health Commission said on Monday that no new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported on the mainland on Sunday.

A total of 16 imported cases were reported on the mainland. Among them, 11 were reported in Sichuan province, three in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and two in Guangdong, the Commission said.

No deaths related to the disease or new suspected cases were reported, it added.

On Sunday, three people were discharged from hospitals after recovery, while the number of severe cases remained three.

As of Sunday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 83,017, including 76 patients who were still being treated, and 78,307 people who had been discharged after recovery.

Altogether 4,634 people had died of the disease, the commission said.

By Sunday, the mainland had reported a total of 1,756 imported cases. Of the cases, 1,694 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 62 remained hospitalized, no in severe conditions. No deaths from the imported cases had been reported.

The Commission said three people were suspected of being infected with the virus, all were imported from overseas.
