The 30-share Sensex, which lost 108.13 points in the previous session, fell by 97.45 points, or 0.58 per cent, to 16,615.88 in opening trade today.
In a similar fashion, the wide-based National Stock Exchange Nifty index moved down by 35.15 points, or 0.70 per cent, to 4,982.05.
Information and technology, banking, realty and metal stocks bore the brunt of the selling pressure, dragging down the 30-share Sensex.
Brokers said increased selling by funds and retail investors, tracking a weakening trend in the rest of Asia amid renewed fears that the euro zone sovereign debt crisis is worsening, dampened the trading sentiment here.
In the Asian region, Hong Kong`s Hang Seng Index fell by 1.02 per cent, while Japan`s Nikkei Index shed 1.40 per cent in morning trade today.
