Forex dealers said strengthening of the dollar against other Asian currencies and the euro and a subdued opening in the domestic stock market mainly put pressure on the rupee.
In addition, month-end dollar demand from oil companies also put pressure on the rupee, they said.
The rupee ended 4 paise higher at Rs 45.63/64 against the American currency in the previous session on the back of dollar-selling by exporters amid firm equity markets.
Meanwhile, the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex fell by 92.97 points, or 0.56 per cent, to 16,405.50 in opening trade today.
