Brasilia: Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, informed his office in a statement. The result was confirmed on Sunday afternoon, Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying.

The statement added that Mourao will remain in isolation at the official Vice Presidential residence.

President Jair Bolsonaro had tested positive in July and recovered after having only mild symptoms, after which First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro also contracted the virus.

Brazil currently accounts for the third highest number of Covid-19 cases and second highest deaths.

As of Monday morning, the number of cases increased to 7,484,285, while the death toll stood at 191,139.

On the other hand, the he total number of coronavirus cases across the world has topped 80.7 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.76 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Monday morning, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 80,751,164 and 1,764,215, respectively.

The US, currently the hardest-hit country in the world by the Covid-19 pandemic, the country’s infection tally and the death toll currently stood at 19,129,368 and 333,110, respectively, revealed the CSSE today.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,187,850, while the country's death toll soared to 147,622.
