Rain to lash Odisha over next couple of days, yellow alert issued for 19 districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rainfall in several parts of Odisha over the next couple of days. 

The weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for 19 districts, warning residents to remain cautious as changing weather conditions may lead to sudden thunderstorms, strong winds, and lightning strikes.

Rain Due To Kalbaisakhi

According to the IMD, the impact of the weather system is likely to be more prominent in the northern coastal districts of the state. Several areas may witness Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) type thunderstorms, which are typically associated with intense lightning, gusty winds, and short spells of heavy rain. These conditions may also bring temporary relief from the prevailing heat, but could cause disruptions in normal life.

The districts expected to experience thunderstorms and rainfall on Friday include Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, and Puri. Authorities have advised residents in these areas to stay alert and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning.

Orange Warning For Few Districts

Meanwhile, the weather department has also warned about intense heat and humid conditions in several regions of the state. In view of the possible severe weather activity, an Orange Warning has been issued for four districts on March 8, indicating the likelihood of more intense thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds.

The IMD has urged people to follow safety advisories and remain updated with the latest weather bulletins.
