The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Odisha, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal.
As per the IMD, the system is expected to intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours, triggering widespread rainfall across the state. Coastal and southern Odisha are already witnessing continuous downpours, raising concerns of waterlogging and localized flooding.
Today, an orange alert has been issued for the Koraput and Malkangiri districts, where extremely heavy rainfall is predicted. The Twin Cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar have also experienced steady showers since morning, affecting normal life and traffic movement.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has placed most other districts under a yellow warning, urging residents to remain cautious. Rainfall activity is forecast to persist for at least the next three days across Odisha.
For Saturday, the IMD has sounded an orange alert for Nabarangpur district, while a yellow warning remains in effect for the rest of the state.
Taking precautionary measures, the district administration in Malkangiri has declared a holiday for all schools today, ensuring the safety of students amid the adverse weather conditions. Officials have advised people to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain alert to further updates.
