Under the influence of Cyclone Montha, rainfall activity has begun in Paralakhemundi, with overcast skies and steady showers reported since morning. The weather pattern in the region has remained cloudy, with intermittent rainfall observed from around 9:00 am. An orange warning has been issued for Gajapati district for Monday, while a red alert has been declared for Tuesday.
In view of the heavy rainfall forecast, the local administration has taken precautionary measures, recalling previous incidents of landslides caused by heavy rainfall. All seven blocks of Paralakhemundi have been put under full preparedness, with Fire Department personnel stationed across key areas. Several ODRAF teams are expected to arrive and will be deployed as required.
Five NDRF teams have already been mobilised in districts anticipated to face the associated rainfall triggered by the cyclone.
In addition, three more teams have been dispatched from the Mundali NDRF base to Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Rayagada districts to assist in cyclone preparedness, reportedly. Two teams have also visited Malkangiri and Koraput for inspection. All teams are equipped with life jackets, oxygen cylinders, tree-cutting machines, and other essential emergency tools.
Cyclone Location and Impact
Cyclone Montha is currently about 790 kilometres from Gopalpur. Weather conditions have changed across southern Odisha, with rainfall starting in Ganjam and Gajapati districts. Gopalpur has witnessed rain accompanied by strong winds, and authorities have closed the sea beach for public safety. Tourists were asked to vacate the area, and all shops in the tourist zones were directed to shut down to prevent any untoward incidents.
District-Level Monitoring and Relief Plans
Nearly 22 blocks of Ganjam have experienced rainfall and gusty winds under the influence of the cyclone. Chikiti and Patrapur areas are under close observation, and relocation measures are in place as well. Arrangements have also been made to supply dry and cooked food to residents if required.
Meanwhile, Malkangiri and Gajapati districts are witnessing heavy rainfall with increasing wind speed. Reports suggest that during the landfall process of Cyclone Montha, wind speeds may reach between 90 and 100 kilometres per hour. Various disaster response teams remain on alert to manage any emergency situations that may arise.
