The Chief of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Saturday (Sept 25) stated that the depression over Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression which might intensify into a cyclone by today evening.
The cyclone will likely make its landfall between Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur areas on the evening of September 26.
The IMD DG stated that under the influence of the possible cyclone, southern parts of the state will likely witness extremely heavy rainfall. Additionally, under the influence of the cyclone, water-logging is very possible in the southern areas of Odisha, all the way till Puri district.
An ‘Orange Warning’ for thunderstorm with lightning and hailstorm has also been issued for several districts for the next 24 hours.
As per IMD, thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapada, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri and Cuttack in the next 24 hours.
Following sweltering heat over the last few days, different places in North, West and South Odisha witnessed intense to moderate thunderstorm activity.
The IMD has also issued orange and yellow warning for several districts.
