Amid the cyclone threat looming over Odisha, the regional meteorological centre on Wednesday (Dec 1) issued red warning for heavy rainfall in several districts of the state.
As per the IMD, the Low Pressure Area over central Andaman Sea & neighbourhood still persists and is likely to concentrate into a depression by tomorrow (Dec 2).
It is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over Central Bay of Bengal during subsequent 24 hours and is expected to reaches near north Andhra Pradesh & Odisha coasts by the morning of December 4th.
However, the place for landfall of the cyclonic storm has not been established yet. For December 4th, red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha.
Similarly, Yellow warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur on December 3rd.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier this week issued a heat wave warning in several parts of the nation. The areas that may experience a heat wave are many pockets of Gangetics West Bengal and Bihar, isolated pockets of Odisha and heat wave conditions very likely in “east Uttar Pradesh, Sub Himalayan West Bengal, Jharkhand, Konkan and Goa, Saurashtra and Kutch.”
Odisha witnessed its third longest heat wave spell in the past one and a half decades in April this year. As per the data shared by the IMD Bhubaneswar scientist, Umashankar Das on his X handle, the 2024 April saw the heat wave spell continue from April 14 till April 30th. The heat wave was witnessed for as many as 16 days in succession in April 2024.
Odisha is searing in intense heatwave conditions for the last several days and as per the India Meteorological Department, there is no immediate relief expected from the scorching weather.
There seems to be no respite from heatwave for the people in several parts of Odisha as the mercury level touched 41 degree mark by 11:30 am on Sunday.
