TRAI's New Mandate Will Save Telecom Users Money, Call And SMS-Only Tariff Plans

"Big news for telecom users in India! The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, or TRAI, has rolled out new regulations that bring major benefits for consumers. With the Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations 2024, telecom operators will now be required to offer tariff plans focused solely on SMS and voice call benefits. This move is a game-changer, especially for the 150 million 2G users and those who rely on two SIM cards—one for calls and texts, and the other for data. No more paying for unnecessary data plans that don’t serve your needs. Right now, 2G users are forced to buy expensive plans that include data, which often go unused. This shift could impact telecom giants like Airtel and Vi, who still run 2G networks, while Jio, which only offers 4G or 5G, will see less effect Meanwhile, telcos are looking for ways to boost their Average Revenue Per User with bundled plans that combine data, calls, SMS, and even OTT benefits. TRAI has listened to consumer feedback and surveys, shaping these regulations to ensure users get more value for their money. And that’s not all—Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs), which are cheaper than regular plans, will now be valid for a full year, giving consumers even more bang for their buck! It’s a win for telecom users across India!"
