IPL 2022 has so far been quite unusual, with two of the most successful teams in the premier league languishing at the bottom of the points table. It was yet another doubleheader day at the Tata Indian Premier League on Saturday as CSK took on Sunrisers Hyderabad and RCB faced Mumbai Indians in the evening encounter. After four games, both Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians find themselves at the bottom of the table. Here’s how Saturday panned out.
In the Match-17 of IPL 2022 that was played at DY Patil Stadium, opting to field first the orange army restricted CSK to a modest score of 154/7 in 20 overs and then their batters, especially opener Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathy who came in at No.3 successfully chased down the target in 17.2 overs.
Abhishek Sharma’s fine knock of 75 runs in 50 balls included 5 fours and 3 sixes. After skipper Williamson departed, in came Rahul Tripathy whose late cameo of 39 runs helped Sunrisers Hyderabad register a comprehensive eight-wicket win against defending champions Chennai Super Kings.
In the second game of Saturday, Mumbai Indians faced RCB who came into the match after consecutive victories against Kolkata and Rajasthan. Put into bat first, MI suffered a major batting collapse after their skipper Rohit Sharma departed. From 50 for no loss at one stage, Mumbai Indians were down to 62/5 in no time. Middle order batter Suryakumar Yadav lifted them singlehandedly from 79/6 to a total of 151.
After defeat against Delhi, Rajasthan and KKR, Mumbai Indians were looking to turn things around against RCB, but 151 was never going to be enough for the five-time champions. Anuj Rawat and Virat Kohli’s partnership ensured a comprehensive win for RCB with 9 balls to spare. Mumbai Indian's fourth straight loss meant they joined CSK in the table with zero wins in four matches. Hopefully, both the champion teams manage to turn things around in their next games.
