From Hockey To Wrestling, CWG Cuts 9 Sports Raising Concerns About India’s Medal Chances
In a setback for India’s hopes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, key sports such as badminton, cricket, hockey, squash, table tennis, and wrestling have been excluded from the schedule. This decision affects six of the twelve disciplines where India secured medals during the 2022 Games. This follows the removal of shooting and archery, two sports in which India has traditionally excelled at the Commonwealth Games, from the 2022 edition held in Birmingham. The 2026 edition, featuring only 10 sports and roughly 3,000 athletes, will take place from July 23 to August 2.
This decision has sparked significant backlash from India’s sporting administrators. The omission of these sports, especially racquet sports, marks an unusual situation for a multi-discipline event, raising concerns about the impact on India’s chances for medal success in the upcoming Games.
Reportedly, Glasgow's organizers are adapting by limiting the event to just four venues within an 8-mile radius to save on transport and security. This approach marks a shift in planning, prioritizing available venues over sports selection. Additionally, athletes and support staff will be accommodated in hotels instead of a dedicated Games Village to reduce expenses.
