The FIH (International Hockey Federation) Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup is all set to take place between 24th November and 5th December, 2021 and guess what, Odisha will be hosting the global event this year. Putting the state on the world sports map again, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik made an official announcement in this regard on Thursday (September 23), in presence of FIH president Narinder Dhruv Batra.
The Chief Minister announced that Odisha is going to host the 12th edition of Junior Men's Hockey World Cup at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar from 24th November to 5th December.
India are the defending champions and will again be the favorites this year. As per reports, Australia and New Zealand have pulled out of the tournament and will be replaced by two next best-ranked junior teams.
Wishing the Junior Men’s team, Patnaik said he is sure India as the reigning champion will take advantage of the home ground and emerge victorious again. During the event today, Patnaik also unveiled the Hockey World Cup logo and trophy.
“Despite the short notice period after Hockey India approached us to extend support to the World Cup, since the country’s prestige is at stake, we have readily agreed to support. I am happy to announce that Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar will be hosting the FIH Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup from 24th November to 5th December, 2021,” said Patnaik.
The CM further stated, “Odisha will continue to be a part of this journey of Indian Hockey. We have already announced that we will support the Indian national hockey teams for another 10 years. We are also building India’s largest hockey stadium in Rourkela.”
