Everytime during elections, you must be coming across this term NOTA. NOTA or ‘None Of The Above’ option provides voters with the choice of formally rejecting all the candidates, signalling their dissent. In September 2013, Supreme Court ruled in favour of including the NOTA options into ballots with the belief that that it would initiate greater participation in the voting process. The order emphasised on the fact that inclusion of NOTA would compel political parties to nominate candidates of higher quality. To facilitate NOTA, the Election Commission used a specific symbol which appears in the last panel on all Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). A NOTA vote is considered neutral and holds no numerical value to the final tally. It differs from a negative vote and serves purely as a means for the voters to show their discontent. If NOTA garners maximum number of votes, then the candidate with the second-highest votes is declared the winner.
