The Lower PMG square in Bhubaneswar turned into a battlefield after several workers of Odisha Student’s Congress scuffled with the police on Friday (Dec 10). The agitating party workers demanded justice for the slain lady teacher of Kalahandi, Mamita Meher. The Congress workers scuffled with the police after breaking the security cordon on their way to gherao Odisha Assembly. Police resorted to lathi-charge and even chased and thrashed protesting Congress workers in their party office. Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar DCP said some Congress workers tried to set ablaze police vehicles & fire services personnel intervened in due time to prevent any untoward incident.
Sarma had resigned from the Congress in 2015 and played a pivotal role in the BJP winning power for the first time in 2016.
Urban body polls were held in the State in March-April this year after a delay of more than two years. But, this time too, there was no reservation of seats for OBCs.
