Orange alert: Heavy rains to lash Odisha districts on September 26 & 27

Heavy rains and thunderstorms with lightning will hit Odisha on September 26-27, as a low-pressure area is set to form over the Bay of Bengal, intensifying into a depression. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for several districts urging preparedness.

With a Low-Pressure area likely to form over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours, which is very likely to concentrate into a Depression, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre on Thursday predicted heavy rains and thunderstorm with lightning in several Odisha districts during September 26 & 27.

IMD has issued an Orange Warning in these districts of the State for the two days.

In its mid-day bulletin, the IMD stated, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over the eastcentral and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal and extended up to middle tropospheric levels persists at 0830 hours IST of today, the 25th September. It is likely to move nearly westwards gradually. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during next 12 hours. Moving nearly westwards, it is very likely to concentrate into a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off South Odisha- North Andhra Pradesh coasts on 26th September. It is very likely to cross South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around 27th September morning.”

For Thursday (Valid up to 0830 hrs IST of 26.09.2025)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of South Odisha and at many places over the districts of North Odisha.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Angul, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Deogarh, Dhenkanal, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

For Friday (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 26.09.2025 to 0830 hrs IST of 27.09.2025)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha.

Orange Warning: (Be Prepared)- Heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, and Malkangiri.

Yellow Warning: (Be Aware)- Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Puri, Khurda, Kandhamal, Balasore, and Nayagarh.

Heavy rain and thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 20-30 kmph gusting to 40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, and Bolangir.

Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 20-30 kmph gusting to 40 kmph are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar.
