In a tragic mishap, at least seven people died and one is still missing after a boat carrying about 50 people capsized in the Mahanadi River in Jharsuguda on Friday. With the joint effort of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force and fire service personnel, all the seven bodies have been identified by the administration. However, rescue operations are still underway to trace the missing woman. As per reports, there is a temple on an islet in the middle of the river. About 50 people including children and women from Kharsia area in neighbouring Chhattisgarh state had gone to the temple from Saradha ghat under Lakhanpur block of Jharsuguda district. On their way to Banjipali in Bargarh district, the boat capsized. Local people alleged that boat was devoid of essential safety equipment like life jackets. Local fishermen rushed to rescue the people trying to keep themselves afloat. They managed to rescue over 40 people. As soon as ODRAF and Fire Services Team got the information they rushed to the spot to carry out the rescue operation. Jharsuguda collector Aboli Sunil Narvane, who reached the spot after being alerted told that the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force is continuing the search operations. Expressing grief over the tragedy, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of the victims. He also instructed the district administration to provide all necessary medical assistance to rescued persons.
