Odisha Witnesses Spike In Crime Against Women, 11 Rape Incidents Reported In 50 Days!
What is happening in Odisha?
Odisha is bleeding! Brutalisation against women and minor girls has risen alarmingly in the state. There has been a significant increase in reported cases where women have been subjected to rape, harassment, and domestic abuse.
Shockingly, Odisha has witnessed over 11 rape cases in the past 50 days, out of which three were in the capital city Bhubaneswar itself.
RAPE CASE IN CUTTACK (Nov 20)
In a shocking incident, an eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Trisulia area under Baranga police limits in Cuttack. Due to excessive bleeding, the little girl has been admitted to Sishubhawan for treatment. Her parents reportedly work at a nearby brick kiln, and it is suspected that the miscreant abducted her from the kiln and took her to an isolated place where he outraged her modesty.
This is not the sole incident of rape; such incidents continue to shake the conscience of people in society.
CASE OF RAPE IN BHUBANESWAR
On November 16, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to sexual assault after being kidnapped in Bhubaneswar.
As per initial reports, the minor girl went missing in the morning. After she was untraceable, her parents launched a search. Later, she was found by a woman near an under-construction house. As the girl had some injury marks on her body, Lingaraj police rushed her to the hospital.
CASE OF RAPE IN BHUBANESWAR
On October 31, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by four persons under the Nayapalli Police Station limits in Bhubaneswar. Even the accused shot the video of the heinous crime, and sought money from the victim’s mother by threatening to make the video viral. So far, 3 persons have been arrested by Nayapalli Police in connection with the incident.
CASE OF RAPE IN BHUBANESWAR
On October 1, two unidentified miscreants allegedly robbed a flat and raped a woman who was alone inside the flat in an apartment in Maitri Vihar police limits in Bhubaneswar.
CASE OF RAPE IN BARGARH
On November 15, Palpable tension prevailed at Padampur area in Bargarh district after body of a minor girl was found dumped deep inside Dunguri forest. As the deceased minor girl’s body was found naked, it was suspected that she was murdered after sexual assault.
CASE OF RAPE IN CUTTACK
November 4: The entire state was left in shock over the gang rape of a college student during Dussehra. As per the allegations levelled, the girl student had gone to a cafe with her boyfriend in the Puri Ghat police station area in Cuttack during Dussehra to celebrate her birthday. However, the boyfriend allegedly with the help of the cafe owner filmed some of their intimate moments on his phone there.
With that video, the boyfriend and his friends blackmailed her and raped her multiple times. After a complaint was lodged on November 4, the accused were arrested within the next two days.
CASE OF RAPE IN KENDRAPARA
On November 2: A 32-year-old widow was allegedly raped by her neighbour in Odisha's Kendrapara district. A 36-year-old man was arrested after the woman lodged an FIR against him alleging that he raped her when she was alone at home.
CASE OF RAPE IN JAJPUR
On October 27: An eight-year-old girl was brutally raped by her neighbour, an elderly man, who lured the little girl on some pretext and committed the heinous crime.
CASE OF RAPE IN NAYAGARH
On October 20: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by three unidentified persons in front of her fiancé in a forest in Odisha’s Nayagarh district. The incident took place on October 20, but came to light when the survivor lodged a complaint with the Fategarh police station on October 25.
CASE OF RAPE IN MALKANGIRI
On October 14: A woman was allegedly raped when she was alone in her house under Motu Police limits in Malkangiri.
CASE OF RAPE IN ROURKELA
On October 6: A minor girl was allegedly raped by her uncle under Raghunathpali police limits in Rourkela. The matter came to the fore after the survivor’s family members lodged a police complaint against the accused, who is a distant relative of the victim.
Despite collective efforts to curb the rising incidents of crime and sexual violence against women, cases continue to escalate at an alarming rate. The need of the hour is swift and effective implementation of laws to ensure timely conviction and consequently timely justice for the victims.
