After being on a run for the last 55 days, the absconding Trinamool Congress Leader Shajahan Sheikh has been arrested by the state police. The arrest came day after the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam observed that any investigating agency, state or central, is empowered to arrest Shahjahan, against whom there are complaints of oppression of local people. As per the latest information available, Shahjahan has been give a 10-days police custody by Basirhat Sub-divisional court. Sandeshkhali had been on the boil for the last few weeks with the local people, especially women, hitting the streets protesting against the oppression by the TMC leader. ATTACKING ED TEAM On January 5th, Shahjahan was charged of attacking and stone pelting on ED Team in the Minakhan area of North 24 Parganas District of West Bengal. LAND GRABBING The central agencies have also filed fresh case in connection with the land grabbing allegation. MONEY LAUNDERING The case of land grabbing against the TMC Leader is equivalent to an FIR in matter of Prevention of Money Laundering Act. CRIMINAL ASSAULT & INTIMIDATION Locals also highlights that the TMC leader used Criminal Assault and Intimidation to carry out various government scheme scams, especially for MGNREGA Projects. SEXUAL HARASSMENT A large number of women in Sandeshkhali had accused the TMC Leader of Sexual Harassment and torture.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a batch of petitions seeking mandatory cross-verification of the votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips. However, a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the Election Commission of India to examine the suggestion if the VVPAT slips may have unique barcodes on them in addition to the party symbol, which in turn could be counted by an electronic machine.
