RG Kar Rape-Murder: What Is 'Nabanna Abhijan', Who Is Leading It | Kolkata

The 'Nabanna Abhijan’ march has been called by the Paschim Banga Chatra Samaj against the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The 'Nabanna’ march kicked off in West Bengal today seeking justice for the victim doctor and resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The ‘Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj’ is leading the 'Nabanna Abhijan’ march to the West Bengal state secretariat ‘Nabanna’ to press its demand.
Despite the administration calling the demonstration illegal, the student union held its protest march to the state secretariat, which soon turned into a fortress with heavy police deployment. Besides, police used water cannons to disperse protestors from Howrah Bridge.
Amid these chaos and commotion, here’s what you should know about the Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj:
Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj is an unregistered student group. The rally is being organised by Prabir Das, a Master's student of Rabindra Bharati University. The students have claimed that their group is apolitical. They say that the government's handling of the rape-murder case has proved that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is "incompetent".
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has urged the state government not to use power to stop the "peaceful protesting students in Nabanna Abhijan rally."
He further reminded the state government of the verdict of the Supreme Court and said that democracy cannot silence the majority. The students pose three demands — justice for Abhaya, capital punishment for the culprit, and Mamata Banerjee's resignation.
