The Parliament has passed three revised Bills to replace the existing British-era criminal laws or the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and the Indian Evidence Act. 3 criminal law amendment bills passed in Lok Sabha. The IPC is replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita Bill, 2023; the CrPC of 1973 is replaced by the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita, 2023 and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872 is replaced by the Bharatiya Sakshya (Second) Bill, 2023. Technology used to make Indian justice system most advanced in the world. While introducing the revised Bills, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “With the use of technology, efforts have been made to make Indian justice system the most advanced in the whole world. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a batch of petitions seeking mandatory cross-verification of the votes cast in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) with Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips. However, a bench headed by Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked the Election Commission of India to examine the suggestion if the VVPAT slips may have unique barcodes on them in addition to the party symbol, which in turn could be counted by an electronic machine.
