The ‘Tribeni Yuva Janakalyan Organization’ conducted a mass marriage in Jhargram of West Bengal to help the poor and needy families from backward areas of Gopiballavpur.

The initiative was launched by the local organization in 2008 with an aim to curb child marriage, control woman trafficking and torture. Every year on the 12th of December, at least 40-50 couples get married, but this year because of the pandemic, the count has dropped and only 12 couples from poor families tied the nuptial knot.

Apart from Bengal, the mass marriage programme is also organized by the foundation every year in Odisha and Jharkhand. Organizers provide clothes, jewelry, bicycles, beds, mattress, almirah/wardrobe, household items and utensils to all the couples.

"This program turned 13 years. Not only in Bengal, we have also been organising this event in Odisha and Jharkhand. Due to Covid, this year we arranged a marriage program for 12 couples. Otherwise we arrange for 30-40 and do whatever is possible on our part. Till today, 1652 couples have been married off. Our next program is in Odisha and Jharkhand. We give a bed, cycle, mattress, utensils, sweets and we give them everything that is required for survival. We also give them a small amount of gold jewelry. We arrange everything," said Sanatan Das, organizer and Secretary of the Tribeni Yuba Janakalyan foundation.

Newly married bride-grooms and their families are also happy with the arrangements and token of gifts they are provided with for their future use.
