Sambalpur Municipal Corporation New Building Replicating Hirakud Dam Almost Ready!
This captivating structure resembling Hirakud Reservoir, the world’s longest dam, will be the new office building of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) & Sambalpur Development Authority. The 4-storey building which is nearing completion is being constructed over 5 acres land at Durgapali on the outskirts of Sambalpur.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR) and design of the building was reportedly prepared by a Kolkata-based firm. While the outside of building replicates spillway of dam, the interior would portray rich culture and heritage of Sambalpur. So far, Rs 13.72 crore has been spent for the project, the construction work of which started in September 2017.
“For the new building of Sambalpur Municipal Corporation office, we wanted a replica of world’s longest dam – Hirakud – and the model was approved by government,” said Pradeep Kumar Sahu, Commissioner of SMC.
At present, the municipal corporation office is operational from a building constructed at 1927. Staff strength increase at SMC office and several other problems necessitated shifting to the new building on Mahanadi riverside. Once complete, both municipal corporation and development authority offices will function from this one building.
“This was planned long ago by the government. The municipality office built in the British era is failing to accommodate all the staff. So this is definitely a welcoming step,” said a local.
