On many occasions, in places where societal acceptance has been a myth for couples bonded in inter-caste marriages, social organisations have stepped in.
A recent incident from Sambalpur's Kuchinda corroborates the tragedy many couples face in the aftermath of inter-caste and inter-faith marriages. Here, a few social workers performed the last rites of one Suresh Bagh from Kesaibahal Uparpada area who was shunned by his family members and villagers for marrying a woman from other caste. Suresh and his wife were ostracized following their inter-caste marriage.
When Suresh died on January 9, his wife was helpless as not a single villager or anyone from his family came forward to perform his cremation rituals.
Receiving information, Kesaibahal Samiti member along with a few social workers in the area reached Suresh's house and performed his last rites following Covid protocols.
The wife of the deceased has also been assured monetary assistance by the social workers for her survival.
