Flood Threat In Odisha: Jalaka River Flows Over Danger Mark

Incessant rain in upper catchment areas has led to the rise in water level of Jalaka River, which is flowing above the danger mark at Mathani in Balasore.

As per the latest data available, the water level of the river was at 7.18 metres against the danger mark of 5.80 metres. Reportedly, as many as 12 panchayats under Basta block in the district have been marooned due to the flash floods.

Moreover, the locals of Rasulpur and Srirampur panchayats under Sadar block and several villagers of Baliapal block are also facing the wrath of flooding.

Rescue operations have also been launched to move the stranded villagers to a safer place. The locals fear that the river embankment may collapse causing more havoc in the district if the rain continues.

Blaming the callous attitude of the administrations, villagers alleged that repair works of the embankment has not been done in the past 10 years.
