In a shocking incident, a doctor of Bhadrak Chandbali community health centre allegedly demanded bribe from a family for treatment of pregnant woman who was in labour. The relatives of the patient along with social workers submitted a memorandum to the CDMO alleging that the doctor Pradyumna Kumar Sahu demanded Rs 3000-4000 for safe delivery of the child. Allegations have also surfaced that Sahu is treating patients at his official quarters and taking fees from them for the same.
“My sister-in-law was brought to the hospital in the evening at 7PM. When Pradyumna Sahu came to attend to the patient, the bleeding had already started. Patient was not in a condition to bear the pain anymore. Dr Sahu told us if we pay Rs 4000 then he will immediately start the treatment. The ASHA worker who had accompanied us said we will pay Rs 2000 now and the rest amount will be paid in the morning,” alleged complainant Mani Malik.
Another relative of the patient, Bimala Mahalika said, “She (expectant mother) was brought to the hospital for delivery. The doctor did not allow the procedure to begin, there was clear hesitation. When I expressed concerns, they finally carried out the procedure and after delivery they asked me Rs 2000. I told them I will not be able to pay Rs 2000, they said they won't carry out further procedure if required money is not paid. I paid them Rs 1500, and said I will pay the rest amount later during discharge from hospital.”
While the accused doctor did not respond to the allegations, medical officer of Chandbali community health centre said that action will be taken if anyone is found seeking bribe.
“The doctor has already been given a warning. I expect him to render full services to the patients because they deserve it. We will ensure all the required services are provided to the patients, there will be no issues. If there are bribery allegations against anyone, then it is advised to file a written complaint with us so that we will take necessary action,” assured Santosh Prusty, medical officer, Chandbali CHC.
